One San Diego man fell into such a profound sleep – or stupor, the police are not saying which just yet – that he didn’t even notice when the car he was sleeping in caught fire.
Not only was he sound asleep as the flames engulfed the engine of the older model BMW, but he actually put up a fight when he woke up and he saw 2 police officers trying to pull him out. How’s that for gratitude?
“A San Diego police officer spotted the older model BMW on fire at 16th Avenue and K Street around 2 a.m. He found a man sleeping inside,” Fox5 San Diego reports.
The officer called for backup and, with help, he proceeded to have the sleeping man removed from the burning vehicle before the firefighters arrived on the scene. They also tried using fire extinguishers to put out the flames, but were unable to do so. That’s when the man woke up and began acting aggressively towards them.
The man, whose identity hasn’t been made public, was eventually taken away in handcuffs, but the police wouldn’t confirm yet whether he’s been charged with any crime. Sources close to the police tell the same media outlet that he wasn’t just sleeping – he was probably drunk, which would explain why it took the cops so long to rouse him, as well as his violent reaction to being pulled out the (burning) car.
“[The man] appeared to be unaware of what happened. It took a little while to pull him out of the car, but eventually, we were able to pull him out and off to the side. He wasn’t burned,” the officer who rescued him told Fox5.
The man is currently at a detox facility, while an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
