Since 2010, Volvo Cars is controlled by Geely. The Chinese multinational took an interesting approach to reinventing the Swedish automaker, offering complete control to the higher-ups and enough money to make their product plan come true. And it worked, with Volvo selling more cars than ever before!
The Hangzhou-based Chinese company won’t stop here, though. Agreeing to spin off Polestar into a standalone automaker is the next course of action, a change that Volvo confirmed in June 2017 through a press release and a sneak peek at the Polestar logo that will be grafted on all of the automaker’s models.

Back then, Volvo offered limited information on what Polestar would do with its newfound independence, but the automaker’s most recent post on Instagram is an indicator that all will be made clear in the coming weeks. An announcement is expected in October, delineating what sort of ambitions Polestar has for its electrified range of performance-focused models.

The post in question is cryptic, consisting of “The End” written on a black background and no description whatsoever. For all intents and purposes, this could be evidence that the split from Volvo is now complete.

Polestar will be a credible competitor in the emerging global market for high performance electrified cars,” highlights Hakan Samuelsson. Bearing in mind the T8 Twin Engine is the most powerful drivetrain available in current Volvo models, Polestar definitely targets more than 500 bhp from its first production vehicle.

Word on the street is the first Polestar will come in the form of a coupe with more than 600 horsepower, which will make use of the MEP toolkit developed for the SPA platform. More to the point, MEP is capable of handling a dual-motor setup, 612 PS (603 ponies), and a battery pack no larger than 100 kWh.

It’s also certain that Polestar will adopt GKN’s all-new eTwinsterX electrified axle for its high-performance models. The driveline technology prides itself on compact packaging, industry-leading efficiency, and torque vectoring technology.
