Polestar Announces U.S. Subscription Service, First-Year Allocation is Sold Out

Inspired by the Volvo Concept Coupé and based on the Scalable Product Architecture, the 1 is more than meets the eye. It’s a comfortable grand tourer with seating for four people and an electric range of 150 kilometers (93 miles), coming courtesy of 34 kWh of electrical energy. The most impressive thing about the Polestar 1, however, is the supercar-rivaling performance of the plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Does it even come as a surprise that all 200 cars destined for North America in the first year of production are sold out? This particular information was confirmed by Polestar chief executive officer Thomas Ingenlath. The head honcho further revealed that production would start in mid-2019 at the Polestar Production Center, located in the People’s Republic of China.

“Polestar is a global brand from day one, operating in the world’s most important car markets – Europe, China, and North America. We will, therefore, be opening Polestar Spaces in major U.S. cities as demand requires them,” continued Ingenlath. "We are also developing a new Polestar North America organization to meet the demands of this important market.”

Priced at $155,000 in the United States, the 1 can be enjoyed without the hassle of traditional car ownership through a subscription service similar to Care by Volvo. Polestar didn’t go into detail regarding the costs, but on the other hand, we can get a clear idea on what the lessee receives in exchange for a flat, monthly rate.

In the case of Care by Volvo, the subscription includs premium insurance no matter where the customer lives, maintenance and excess wear coverage, a brand-new car in as little as 12 months, and an allowance of 15,000 per year. At this time, Volvo doesn’t offer additional mileage as an optional extra.

Taking the XC40 T5 AWD as an example, the monthly lease payment comes in at $650 for 24 months, based on a retail price of $41,445. As for the fine print of the contract, Volvo says the lessee is responsible for excess wear above $1,000 and any mile over the yearly limit. Once you pass 15,000 miles, the automaker charges $0.25 per mile.
