For years, Tesla had it easy in its segment, with few noteworthy competitors. That was possible because the giants of the industry were undecided as to which way the wind is blowing, and the gazillion startups that popped up like mushrooms were all talk and no action.
But from 2020, that will change. The big boys are coming out to play, and they’ll be making good cars in great numbers. Backed by decades of experience, they’ll most than surely put a big dent in Tesla’s hopes of dominating the market.
But what is likely to hurt Tesla even more are not big companies, but smaller ones, because they are going after the exact same customers Tesla is now serving. And a Swedish-born company with Chinese owners by the name of Polestar is shaping up to become one of the greatest threats for Tesla.
Presently, there isn’t a single Polestar car on the road, but come 2020 that will change. Two electric vehicles will be unleashed, both with exciting configurations and looks that may be considered to be far better than those of current Tesla models.
Polestar is already accepting orders for the 1, and reservations for the 2, and plans on rolling them out next year in great numbers.
The biggest threat to Tesla will be the Polestar 2, seen as the first true competitor for the Model 3, and shown for the first time in public earlier this year at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show. Priced at EUR58,000, the car comes with 408 hp and 500 km (310 miles) of range, more than enough to threaten the leader.
This week, Polestar announced it has begun production of a prototype series at its facility in Luqiao, China, a precursor move to actual mass production that is supposed to begin next year.
“Polestar 2 tooling trial prototypes are now rolling off the final production line in the Luqiao factory, and so nearing series production,” said in a statement Thomas Ingenlath, Chief Executive Officer of Polestar.
“Cars will be with customers in the first half of 2020, as planned. We will continue to make good on our promises.”
