Polestar 2 Officially Goes After Tesla with $59,900 Price, Lower Than Planned

Tesla has a lot of competition coming its way in the not so distant future, but perhaps the most threatening of all seems to be that of Polestar. The newcomer, backed by Volvo’s engineering prowess and Geely’s bucket load of money, seems to have all it takes to become a real thorn in Tesla’s side.

The car Polestar plans to use as a main weapon in the upcoming battle is the 2, an electric fastback that looks stunning and has performance on par with Tesla’s best selling Model 3. And the Polestar also throws something unique into the mix, namely the world’s first built-in infotainment system powered by Android.

Initially, Polestar targeted a starting price for the 2 in the United States of $63,000, but the company announced this week it would actually be lower than that, namely $59,900. That places it below state incentive thresholds in key markets, including California and New York, and could allow customers to benefit in some cases of up to $9,500 worth on rebates.

“We are quite enthusiastic to announce the U.S. pricing for the Polestar 2,” said in a statement Gregor Hembrough, Head of Polestar USA.

“The MSRP is lower than we originally targeted, and will be extended to all of our current reservation holders. With an online purchase option, lower pricing, considerable tax incentives, and production already underway, the Polestar 2 is well positioned for a successful entry into the U.S. market.”

The Polestar 2 is already in production at the Luqiao, China facility, and is expected to land on U.S. shores this summer. The above price is for the 78 kWh version that offers 408 hp and a 292 mile range (470 km). There are only a handful of extra options, like the Performance Pack or metallic paint, and they cost between $1,200 and $5,000.

In the not so distant future, an entry-level Polestar 2 might join the range, priced from around $45,000.
