It’s about to get really hot on the European electric car segment, as Swedish carmaker Volvo’s spinoff Polestar is getting ready to start deliveries of the 2 fastback. And when they start rolling down the roads, Polestar’s electric cars will do so with access to close to 200,000 charging points.
The carmaker announced this week that it has signed a partnership with charging solutions provider Plugsurfing to give Polestar owners the possibility to charge their cars at any of the network’s 195,000 stations.
This access will be granted thanks to the Plugsurfing RFID tag each Polestar car would be delivered with. This tag will help owners reduce the number of apps or accounts they need when accessing stations across the continent.
Additionally, the included Google Maps would advise owners on charging infrastructure and how to use the Plugsurfing network specifically.
"This international European partnership with Plugsurfing is the first of these solutions and it paves the way for more partnerships which will also include national and local solutions,” said in a statement Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar.
The 2 is made by Polestar at the Luqiao facility in China, and only one version is available for now. This variant is packing a 78 kWh battery and two electric motors that offer a total power output of 408 hp. Also, the the range of the battery has been measured to be 275 miles EPA, or 500 km WLTP.
In the not so distant future, the company plans to offer an entry-level version of the 2.
The Polestar 2 is currently selling in Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
The car has went on sale in the U.S. as well, where the price has been set at $59,900. That’s the base price, of course, as a number of extra features, including the Performance Pack or metallic paint, can add anywhere in between $1,200 and $5,000.
