Remember that UK rider that had to lay his motorcycle down so he can slide under a fallen bridge? We said he’s the only case entitled to do so, otherwise, the maneuver is pointless. Well, add this guy too... sort of.
Riding above your skill is a dangerous situation and usually occurs when new motorcyclists want to prove how good they are on a bike and how fast they can go. Get to ride along one of these guys up the twisties and it’s almost certain he’ll end up in a wreck.

The video you’re about to see appears to be an example of such type of riding and was almost going to end in a tragic way hadn’t the rider lay his machine down in the very last moment.

Two buddies were having some fun on some mountain roads on their sportbikes when the rider up front discovered he was carrying too much speed for the next left-hand turn.

He panicked, instantly froze with his eyes pointing at the road’s shoulder that gave way to a sheer drop behind the trees. The textbook target fixation case intensified with the rider going straight towards the edge.

In a brief moment of sheer terror, the rider managed to squeeze the front brake and the bike slammed to the ground, throwing him to the side after which it plummeted into the abyss.

Luckily, the rider stopped right before the edge and will have a great story to tell next time at the bar. Hopefully he also learned a good lesson from his misadventure.

Now, this is another good case to use the ‘lay ‘er down’ technique, since it was his last chance to avoid breaking every bone in his body. Otherwise, deliberately dropping your motorcycle in the event of an incoming crash in order to part with it and try avoid injuries is plain stupid. As long as you’re on the bike, you can still brake and shed off speed before the impact.
