We’ve been running our mouths about the upcoming BMW G30 5 Series and a lot of people might’ve considered us crazy when we said that it was going to get plug-in hybrid variants but the latest spy shots coming in from out carparazzi are confirming our guesses. They have just sent in a couple of shots with the prototypes wearing two ‘fuel caps’.
While you might have a different take on what that could possibly mean, we’re here to tell you that there’s a 99% probability that the one on the front left fender is for charging the car’s battery. And we don’t mean the one under the bonnet but rather the one located somewhere over the rear axle.

That’s right, this is most definitely a plug-in hybrid and that means it’s using the same technology BMW bragged with on the 3 Series LCI plug-in model that was revealed last week. That means that the upcoming 5 Series will have a battery pack somewhere between the trunk and the passenger compartment.

In turn, those batteries will be used to power an electric motor that will be encompassed in the CVT gearbox’s casing. With it, the 5er will cover up to 20 miles (32 km) on electric range alone, reducing CO2 emissions for daily drives to zero.

On top of that, the internal combustion engine under the bonnet (which might very well be in the 2-liter category) will have an easier task to perform, being aided by the motor’s instant torque. Our guess is that we’re going to have at least a 200 HP plant under the bonnet to add up to a total powertrain output of around 245 HP. That would, in turn mean that we’ll also get to see the 528e moniker on the boot of the next sedan.

New body looks like the G11 7 Series

As far as styling details go, these are, by far, the clearest shots of the car we’ve seen so far. The most important thing to notice is that the bonnet is now reaching all the way down to the kidney grilles unlike on the current models. Furthermore, the rear end seems to be completely different too, with new taillights incorporated.

The size of the car will grow by a small margin but the weight should go down as well. That’s because in its manufacturing, BMW will be using CFRP and lightweight alloys in and outside of the cabin. The iDrive system seen on the 7 Series is also expected to make a debut on the new model.

As for a launch date, you should expect the production car to be unveiled somewhere in 2016 with sales beginning in 2017.
