Volkswagen’s Phaeton luxury flagship has always been an appreciated car, yet never a truly successful one. Being built in what can only be described as a moving museum made out of glass, with a special cargo tram delivering the necessary parts into the factory, it really is unique, especially in the way it’s built.
It embodies Ferdidand Piech’s list of 10 parameters which it must fulfill, all very difficult and virtually unattainable for most cars, even others in its class. Now, while at the Sao Paulo International Motor Show, VW’s R&D Chief, Ulrich Hackenberg has confirmed that the company is already looking to replace the Phaeton, now 10 years old.

The new car would genuinely feel ‘very new’, and will include the group’s latest technologies, showing the notable progress the automotive field has made since it was first introduced. It will be underpinned by VW’s larger MLB platform, which will also be used to underpin the next-genereation Bentley Continental cars, as well as the next Porsche Panamera.
