Giorgio Barbier, Pirelli Moto Racing Director said the company is well pleased of the way their new tires behaved in the first 2013 WSBK race at Phillip Island in Australia and has named the winners of the Best Lap Awards for both SuperBike and SuperSport categories.
The awards go to Michel Fabrizio (Red Devils Roma, 1m31s323 in the7th lap of Race 1), Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing Team, 1m31s168 in lap 20 of Race 2) for SBK and Kenan Sofuoglu (MAHI Racing Team India, 1m33s283 in the 15th lap) of the WSS.

He also added that Pirelli was a bit worried because of the very demanding track conditions in Australia: the new asphalt, the hot weather which demands way more from the tires and the very design of the circuit, full of high-speed corners.

Corners requiring that the rider is leaned over and with a wide-open throttle are becoming less common in Europe, and are gradually replaced by rider safety-focused chicanes which demand other type of behavior from the tires, Barbier added.

All in all, Pirelli is satisfied with the riders being able to put up faster laps. On the statistics side, they brought no less than 3,590 tires at Phillip Island, as follows:

• Number of solutions (dry, intermediate and wet) for World SBK: 6 front and 7 rear
• Number of solutions for World Supersport (dry, intermediate and wet): 4 front and 6 rear
• Number of tires available for each World Superbike rider: 36 front and 38 rear
• Number of tires available for each World Supersport rider: 24 front and 33 rear
• Temperature in Race 1: air 27° C, asphalt 47° C
• Temperature in Race 2: air 26° C, asphalt 48° C
• Maximum race speed reached by Pirelli tires: 320.5 km/h, Michel Fabrizio in Race 1, 3rd lap (WorldSBK.com).
