Piquet Told the FIA about the Singapore Fixing in 2008

Nelson Piquet Sr. allegedly told the International Automobile Federation (FIA) about the race-fixing situation in the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix from as early as last year's Interlagos race. The Brazilian recently revealed that he had a conversation with FIA's race director Charlie Whiting during last year's season finale in which he pointed out the Renault wrongdoings.

However, as confessed by the 3-time world champion himself, there wasn't enough evidence to sustain his arguments. According to him, Whiting told him that the FIA could do nothing about it unless someone comes clean about the whole scam. Worried of what might happen to his son's career if he had confessed, Piquet did not push the matter further on.

When this thing happened in Singapore I couldn't believe it. I'd done motor racing for all my life. I couldn't believe this thing. And after I called Nelson and Nelson said yes they asked me if I could help and this and that. I said 'but you could have hurt yourself and if you didn't hurt yourself you could have hurt somebody else' and he said 'yeah, I know it's wrong' but anyway. Anyway in Brazil I talk to Charlie,” said Piquet in an interview with British newspaper The Daily Mirror.

I got him and I said 'look, what could happen to Nelson if I bring this up?' And I was afraid to screw up the career of Nelson,” added the 3-time world champion.

When Flavio Briatore ousted his son from the Renault F1 Team soon after the Hungarian Grand Prix, the Piquets decided to finally unveil everything. So Piquet Sr. again turned to the FIA, only this time to president Max Mosley. As confirmed by the Brazilian in an interview with Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport, Mosley told him something like “Charlie has already informed me but we can't prove anything unless someone comes to tell me the facts.”

That's when the dad convinced the son to write a long, detailed letter to the FIA, in which he explains what exactly happened during the Singapore weekend one year ago. And the rest of it you all know it, as the story has been underlined by the media like no other in recent weeks.
