Pioneer Launches a Subwoofer So Small You Can Lose It in the Car

Pioneer joined this year’s digital edition of CES with a series of announcements. In addition to the new modular head unit supporting both Android Auto and CarPlay, the company has unveiled a brand-new compact subwoofer for cars.

Called TS-WX010A, the new unit is just 9 inches (22.8 cm) wide and 2.7 inches (6.8 cm) thick, which means it’s not supposed to be installed in the trunk but right in the cabin. And Pioneer says one perfect way where it can be placed is in the passenger footwell, as it won’t compromise the space inside the cabin and still offer a great music listening experience.

It uses 12-volt power, and according to the official specs, comes with a 160-watt max Class D amplifier (50 watts RMS output).

In a press release (also embedded below), the company says such a compact subwoofer fits electric vehicles or hybrids like a glove, as the “low weight, small size, and low power consumption are a priority” in these cars.

The compact dimensions of the TS-WX010A allow it to be installed inside the passenger compartment of most vehicles, providing the potential to integrate acoustically with the vehicle’s full range speakers and seamlessly enhance both output and overall sound quality,” the company says.

With installation options that include vertical or horizontal mounting, the TS-WX010A is optimized for installation in the passenger side footwell (but specifically never in or near the driver side footwell), where its small size affords the ability to be attached near the underside of the dashboard or the center console. The TS-WX010A accepts both RCA type line level or speaker level inputs for connectivity to aftermarket audio systems or integrated into factory installed systems.”

While the modular head unit we told you about earlier is projected to go on sale in the summer, the compact subwoofer will hit the shelves as soon as this month with a $280 price tag.
