Pininfarina and BMW Chief Designers Talk About the Gran Lusso Coupe

Creating such an impressive and unique car, like the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe was definitely a challenge. Keeping the BMW DNA in it whilst also incorporating the Pininfarina touch was achieved with a lot of communication.

Launched last week, at the 2013 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the new concept car left everyone breathless for a couple of seconds, at a first glance. Judging by its majestic looks though, it’s obvious that both companies had to work extra hard to make it happen.

Fabio Filippini, Head of Design at Pininfarina agrees. According to him, the end result was supposed to be better than just a mixture of the two. When they added up the Pininfarina contribution and the BMW side they made sure that the result was more than just a mixture of the two. It is a one-off project on its own.

“The main challenge was to find out where Pininfarina finished and where BMW started. We always discussed: If we do that, is it still Pininfarina? And is it still BMW? In the end, Harim Kabib (BMW’s Head Designer) said <<No. You do Pininfarina and we’ll make sure that what you do is still a BMW”, said Fabio.

We have to agree. The end result is both a Pininfarina and a BMW in equal measure and we hope we’ll see more such cars on the road as soon as possible.
