Although admitting his obvious regret over losing the 7-time world champion after he spent his last 14 years at the Maranello factory, Piero Ferrari insisted that it wasn't the German ace who wanted to leave the prancing horse. Finding himself in a position in which he wanted to race, but he couldn't – as Ferrari already has 2 official drivers for the 2010 season – Schu chose the next best option for his future, which was joining his former team manager Ross Brawn at Brackley.
“We feel a little bad, because Michael was ours. I would have liked him to stay with us, but they are using the word treason: in truth he wanted to race and the conditions were not that he could do it with us,” the 65-year old (only) son of Enzo Ferrari told the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport earlier this week.
In addition, he wanted to express his confidence in Ferrari's new lineup next season, which will be comprised of 2-time world champion Fernando Alonso and 2008 runner-up Felipe Massa.
“We've signed Alonso, who has challenged and beaten Michael. We also have Massa, who took over from Schumacher and has grown a lot. I am convinced we have been able to build a good car, better than that of 2009. We will not lose the title because of the drivers,” added Ferrari.
Ferrari's comments regarding Schumacher come only a few days after the German driver publicly addressed a letter to the Scuderia fans worldwide, in which he asks all of them to continue supporting him, as Ferrari will always be in his heart. Schu won no less than 5 world titles at Maranello, before announcing his retirement at the end of 2006.
