Pick Your Favorite: BMW’s Best Engines Revved

Ok, so maybe this collection doesn’t have all of BMW’s greatest engines in it but it sure comes close with some of the most interesting pieces of engineering ever to come out from Munich on display.

The cars you’re about to see all belonged to a Youtube user that goes by the name ‘BerlinTomek’ and boy, did he have an entertaining life... Amongst his most treasured cars you’ll find both models with inline 6-cylinder units and V8s, all of them sounding crazy good.

First up is BMW’s legendary V10 engine, the S85, a 5-liter naturally aspirated brute that made an incredible sound that ruined all the M5s that came after it, all falling short of its greatness. Making 507 HP and 520 Nm (384 lb-ft) of torque, this beast was one of the loudest engines ever made.

After that we get to enjoy the sound of an E63 BMW 650i, fitted with a 4.8-liter V8 making 360 HP and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque, a direct descendant of the M62 unit that was the basis for the S62 engine used on the E39 M5. Quite a legacy to uphold and quite a sound to match that legacy.

Up next came an E63 M6 fitted with the same S85 engine and then a 630i model with an inline 6-cylinder 3-liter engine that won Ward’s best engine of the year in 2006 and 2007.

Second to last is the S54 engine fitted on the E46 M3 that was used in its Z4 M application here, making a sweet inline 6-cylinder sound that warned you of what hid under the bonnet.

In the end we get to indulge ourselves in the sweetness of the S65 4-liter V8 that used to power the E92 M3. That was the last naturally aspirated engine BMW ever made and it had a more than special sound to it. Enjoy and let us know which is your favorite!
