Right now, the Nurburgring is the mecca of speed, the natural stomping ground for all those who want to live out their inner hooliganism. Every fast car in the world is or has been honed there. A record lap time there instantly becomes a reason for bragging and a invaluable marketing tool.
But it wasn't always the most famous track in Germany! While surfing Reddit, we stumbled upon a cool set of photos which show the Green Hell as it was in 1967. User Rexhardwick says he "recently acquired several boxes of old kodachrome slides dating from 1952-1969 shot by a former engineer for Porsche by the name of Jack Moody. Most of his work is street photography but I felt this roll, shot while driving the ring, belonged here."
The photos are really crisp for 1967, especially since this is 35mm film. The Nurburgring is an altogether different place to what it is now and the lack of trees is puzzling to us. However, we did a bit of searching and found a 1956 photo of the stand and starting are which matches perfectly.
There are no Ferraris and Lamborghinis in this photo set. Instead, these photos show the Renault Dauphine, accompanied by a few examples of the MG A Roadster. A black Mercedes appearing in one of the shots seems to be a 220 Sb W111 and is likely the car from which some of the on-track photos were taken.
It's picture like this that keep us coming to the treasure-trove that is Reddit!
