Now that we know how the new 1 Series looks like and what engines it brings to the table, as expected, some people claim that they don’t like the new look, despite being a radical improvement over the pre-facelift model. That being the case, we decided to put together a photo gallery to show you exactly what the differences are.
For this purpose, we chose the M Sport models as they are the best looking ones by far and also show the biggest changes in between generations.

On the new 1 Series the front fascia is dominated by new sculpted kidney grilles that show a 3D design, just like on the more recent models. However, unlike almost all of the more recent cars in BMW’s stable, this one doesn’t have its headlights connected to the grilles which is a good idea if you ask me.

Furthermore, the headlamps are completely new, looking slimmer and housing a new style for the corona rings that also serve as DRL using LED technology. They come as standard. However, you’ll have to pay extra if you want LED light (and adaptive ones too) to guide you at night as well. LED fog lights can also be fitted now, at a cost, of course.

Up front you’ll also notice the new bumper that has bigger air intakes at the sides even though on the M Sport version they’re fake.

Round the back, on the bumper, the changes are a little more discreet. The aim was to emphasize width and it was successful as far as I’m concerned. The biggest change is the taillamp design.

Unlike on other facelifts, this time BMW decided to actually build completely new taillights from the ground up and we welcome their boldness. Furthermore, the LED strips now are shaped as an “L” falling in the same pattern as more recent models.

To top everything off, there are two new colors now available for the exterior: Platinum Silver metallic and Sparkling Brown metallic. The Estoril Blue metallic color is still M Sport exclusive.

Interior

Inside the cabin the changes were more discreet but still noticeable. The center console design was updated meaning that it has new surrounds here and there and a sleeker look.

You’ll also notice that the M Sport steering wheel is different, lining up with the rest of the range, looking a lot better as well. Standard options inside now include automatic air conditioning, BMW Professional Radio, iDrive with a 6.5” display, tire pressure monitor and rain sensing wipers.

Looking at the photo gallery below you’ll also notice that the headrests have changed, being smaller in the back to allow for better visibility, an issue we complained about in our review of the M135i.

The engine range has changed as well but since we wrote a guide on the matter, we won’t insist on it anymore.
