Philadelphia Cops Retrieve Stolen Prop Police Car

A car thief tried to make off with a prop car on the set of a movie that’s being shot in Philadelphia, but he didn’t make it too far in it. The prop was a police cruiser, Fox29 reports. How’s that for irony.

The movie is “17 Bridges,” which is currently in production in Philadelphia, starring Chadwick Boseman of the “Black Panther” fame and directed by Brian Kirk. Though it’s shooting here, it will be made to look as if it’s taking place in New York, so the prop patrol cruiser was marked with the NYPD badge.

The report doesn’t mention whether the dude stealing the car knew it was a movie prop or if he thought it was the real deal, but it didn’t matter in the end. When he realized the cops were after him, he abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

“Investigators say a prop NYPD vehicle was located with a broken window at I-76 and Montgomery Avenue,” Fox29 says. “Police spotted the car driving erratically, and the man behind the wheel took off on foot. The car was held at the scene as police continue to investigate the incident.”

There goes this dude’s chance of making money off selling movie memorabilia, assuming that was his end goal.

There is no mention of the suspect or if the police have someone in custody – or at least clues as to who it might have been. The car will probably be returned to the movie set once police are done with it.

“17 Bridges” tells the story of a disgraced NYPD cop who’s out to redeem himself by hunting down and catching a serial cop killer. In addition to Boseman, it also stars Taylor Kitsch, J.K. Simmons and Sienna Miller, and is scheduled for release in 2019.
