Peugeot Says Making PureTech Engines Is Like Creating Perfume

There's a saying that goes a little bit like this: "Buy German cars and French perfume, not the other way around!" But Peugeot seems to think these two vastly different products have a lot in common.

This commercial is being shown by the automaker in many countries across Europe. It clearly states that making good engines is like creating the perfect perfume – you take good ingredients and distill them.

No, not like the skinny guy who collects sweat from girls he kills in that movie. No, Peugeot just wants to say that you take three cylinders and remove one to make the engine lighter. While a sexy French voice disguises the weirdness of this idea, we couldn't help but notice an engine with 3 cylinders isn't truly better than one with 4. Smaller… yes, lighter as well; but what they are saying is like suggesting we should remove the one wheel to make the 308 more agile.

The French like to do everything with a bit of fire and spice. This applies to cars and commercials. PureTech is a new modular family of three-cylinder engines that feature the latest technologies. The range is comprised of 1.0- and 1.2-liter naturally aspirated, and 1.2-liter turbocharged direct injection engines. The latter unit is the first turbocharged direct injection petrol engine developed solely by PSA, delivering 130 horsepower to cars in the Peugeot, Citroen and DS ranges.

The power output may be similar to that of the 1.6 VTi, but there's more torque available, and fuel economy is improved by as much as 18%.
