Right after the unconventional rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Renault Twingo came out, Peugeot also revealed its brand new A-segment competitor. The 108 is actually the first-born of a litter of triplets, built under a joint venture between Toyota and PSA. As replacements for the Citroen C1 and the Japanese brand's Aygo model are also pending.
Though we're not huge fans of French city cars, the 108 has a charm of its own. By sticking the "8" on the end, which Peugeot reserves for premium cars, it's almost as if they are telling Renault they'll stick with conventional technology and make a much better car.
It's not all hot air, as the 108 is, just like the 208, probably the lightest car in its class. Peugeot claims a weight of just 840 kg (1,851 lbs) for the lightest model. Again like the 208, the 108 is quite compact and intelligently packaged. The vehicle is 3.47m long and 1.62m wide, which makes it about 70mm shorter than a Fiat 500. Despite this, you will be able to buy the 108 as a 5-door besides the 3-door. Peugeot has even found a way to rival the 500 convertible with a model called the 108 TOP!. The roof only rolls back to the boot lid, but the hatch remains intact so you'll be able to see better out the back.
Power comes from much more conventional engines. The base unit is the 68 hp 1-liter e-VTi equipped with a five-speed or optional automatic. Buy can also have the 1.2-liter PureTech VTi with 82 hp, just like in the 308.
The 108 is going to make its debut next month at the Geneva Motor Show and will go on sale in Britain on July 1st. French deliveries will likely come a little earlier.
The 108 has the makings of a budget car or a premium one as well. It can be a box delivery vehicle, or a lady's precious accessory, thanks to cool shades of metallic brown, purple and even a two-tone paintjob. It has awesome chrome trim that swoops and swerves, a glowing Peugeot badge and large alloy wheels. Peugeot versus Renault… it's a fight I want to see!
