Peugeot announced that it will compete in this year’s Nurburgring 24 hours race, which is scheduled for May 15-16 and has a predicted live audience of 220,000 spectators.
The French automotive producer will bring two RCZ coupes to the famous German event. One of these belongs to a French team, while the other will be run by a German crew, with each of the two having four drivers.
The RCZ will enter the D1T category, which includes diesel vehicles equipped with engines sized between 1.7 and 2.0 liters. It will be powered by a 2.0 liter HDi turbocharged diesel powerplant the delivers 200 hp.
The majority of the unit’s components are stock, while a few come from Customer Peugeot Sport. Just to give you an idea of what that means, we’ll tell you that the standard diesel RCZ’s 2.0 liter engine produces 163 hp.
Peugeot will display a static model of the RCZ racecar at the production RCZ’s world launch, which will be held in Paris starting from April 12.
Entering the RCZ in the Nurburgring race is part of a more complex marketing scheme that has been developed for the vehicle. This will also see it being labeled as the first model in Peugeot’s upcoming “hors-serie” division, a future range aimed at the premium vehicles market.
The next model of the new sub-brand will be a station wagon version of the 508 (the common replacement for the 407 and 607). This will be followed by a third vehicle in 2012, but no details about it have been offered yet.
