Peugeot Eco Cup Launched - European Public Green Driving Competition

Peugeot is using the Brussels Motor Show today to launch an eco-driving contest for European drivers. The competition opens today (entries will be received through February the 10th): candidates form 18 countries can enter through their national Peugeot websites or by following this link.

Four candidates from each country will be selected “in accordance with the regulations, on the basis of their sensitivity to environmental issues”. They will be allowed to choose a co-pilot and then they will be given four vehicles - one for each candidate : the 207 HDi 90, 308 HDi FAP 110, 3008 HDi FAP 110 and 5008 HDi FAP 110.

I guess you can see where this is going: their objective is simple - they will have to cover a distance using as less fuel as possible. 1,000 km, to be more precise.

The 72 vehicles will start their journey from Paris on Sunday, 28 February 2010. The 1000 km route which will eventually end in Geneva has to be covered in a time between 30 and 36 hours. Sorry grand grandfather, you’ll have to stay home.

Finally, on March 2nd, the four most eco-footed of the candidates, one for each model, will be able to take home the corresponding new cars. If you happen to be one of the winners you won’t just drive home in a new car. You’ll also become a local star at the Geneva Motor Show because, as the press release says, that’s where the keys to the vehicles will be handed to the green champions. But what if anybody wants to have Peugeot’s new keyless entry system?

Now don’t go choosing the lightest of your friends to be your teammate : Peugeot says that all the units of the same model will be brought to an equivalent weight. See you there!
