Peugeot stunned the world in 2015 with a working concept car based on the 308, which offered a combined power level of 500 HP from a hybrid powertrain.
The French company has yet to launch that model into production, but that does not mean Peugeot has shelved the insane 500-HP compact car. Instead, the company is trying to make a business case for its triple-motor hot-hatch, which could be unique in the segment if it gets introduced on the market.
Some of you recall that the 308 R Hybrid was presented with a 270-HP 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, which was assisted by two electric motors placed on the rear axle. While the vehicle could achieve an average CO2 emissions value of just 70 grams per kilometer, the primary focus of this car was its performance.
Peugeot told the world that the 308 R Hybrid could sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.0 seconds, and that is as impressive at the end of 2016 as it was last year. If the acceleration from a standing start has not captivated your interest, the French hot hatch came with a hybrid setup that would boost power and torque whenever needed.
It had several operating modes, including a full-electric option, but the most impressive of all was dubbed “Hot Lap,” and it was the one that provided all the power from the hybrid setup to aid the internal combustion unit.
At the time of its presentation, a ballpark price tag close to 70,000 euros was disclosed for those that were curious about that possibility, but the production car might be cheaper.
Unfortunately for those dreaming of a hybrid hot-hatch that will provide a level of performance usually delivered by supercars, the possible production model based on this concept vehicle will cost over 50,000 Euros if it gets the final green light from the company’s management. Peugeot is expected to offer this car in limited numbers, so that exclusivity will justify the high price tag on top of the enthralling performance figures.
