Peugeot is currently putting the final touches on its first compact hot hatch in many years. Our spies have just snapped these photos of a prototype undergoing hot weather testing in Southern Europe. Even though production body panels have not been installed, the twin exhaust system is an unmistakable indication that this is the Peugeot 308 GTi.
The French rival of the Golf GTI will be powered by a smaller engine, as previewed by the 308 R concept from last year. The exact output is not yet known, but the 1.6-liter THP will share many components with the RCZ R and 208 GTi, boasting somewhere in the region of 240 PS and 330 Nm of torque (243 lb-ft). While that might not sound like a lot, Volkswagen offers less from its larger 2.0 TSI engines.

The 308 GTi will have weight and agility on its side. This will be one of the least heavy C-segment hot hatches, tipping the scales at around 1,270 kilograms. Using a six-speed manual, buyers can expect to launch from 0 to 100 km/h in only 6.7 seconds.

Chassis upgrades are going to include lowered suspension with stiffer anti-roll bars, larger shocks and stiffer springs and dampers. Larger ventilated brakes and lightweight 19-inch alloys will also be part of the 308 GTi's arsenal.

So what will it be like to drive? The smaller 208 GTi indicates Peugeot wants to offer more refined and comfortable hot hatches. Lots of standard luxury features will push the hot 308's price over that of the competitors from Ford and Renault.
