Didn't know the prices for the new Peugeot 308 GTi hot hatch? That's because you don't keep a close eye on the hot hatch market like we do. The French practically invented front-wheel drive, so it's only natural that we're excited about Peugeot's finest creation ever!

The launch is scheduled for today, June 30th, but deliveries will take until October 22nd to begin. Only the more powerful model with the 270 PS turbo engine is available, and it costs from 37,200 euros before any options are added. Ouch!

For the money, you do get wider tires, bigger 19-inch wheels, a limited slip differential and the most powerful 1.6-liter turbo engine in the world, mated to a 6-speed stick. However, is this too much money to ask for a 308?

It all depends on the French market perspective because things tend to be more expensive over there. The Megane RS is a good reference point. It starts at €32,350 in France and packs a 2-liter turbo with 265 PS. Golf GTI? €33,750 as a 3-door with a 220 PS turbo engine.

So yes, the Peugeot 308 GTi is expensive even before fully equipped. You can spend another €260 for the reversing camera, €510 for the DENON sound system or even €1,800 for the panoramic roof and twin-color design.

A unique hot hatch: the specs

There are a couple of other hot hatchbacks in the compact segment that use 1.6-liter turbo engines, but most of them are kind of slow. However, we're confident this won't be the case with the 308 based purely on the performance of the RCZ R.

Two versions will be sold, the base one with a 250 PS turbo, which still packs 30 PS more than the Golf GTIm and another with 270 PS. Bigger brakes, twin exhaust and a full body kit are all part of the cosmetic package. We also like the interior, which is refined and grown up, combining Alcantara and black leather with a few contrasting elements.
