The Peugeot 301 has proven that cutting some corners can also be a good idea. Since being introduced in 2012, this budget-oriented French car has sold 360,000 units.
Now, Peugeot wants to spruce thing up, as even the Dacia Logan can offer modern features like auto gearboxes and LEDs all over the place.

Starting next year, the Peugeot 301 will look like this, thanks to a subtle mid-life facelift. The revisions start at the front with a new grille that has pulled the Lion logo from the hood. The headlights have a little indentation at the bottom, just like they do on the 308.

Meanwhile, updates made to the front bumper include the addition of some LEDs and a wing element designed after the much bigger 508 sedan. The family resemblance is important for the French, you see.

They installed a new design for the wheels and upgraded the taillights as well. The significant bit is still the trunk, which can house up to 640 liters (including underfloor space) of your stuff provided it's the right shape.

The interior receives some slight revisions, like the seat fabric or the dash trim. But the part that counts is a new 7-inch touchscreen that can mirror your phone, thanks to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 3D navigation, Bluetooth pairing, USB and a reversing camera all work through the device which seems to be derived from the 208 sister car.

We'll remind you that under Peugeot's naming scheme, any car ending with a '1' is designed to be affordable. Thus, the 301 and its sister car the Citroen C-Elysee ride on a stretched out supermini platform with a rigid rear axle.

The engine range now starts off with a 1.2-liter three-cylinder making 82 horsepower. This is then backed up by the 1.6-liter rated at 115 hp, also available as an automatic. On the diesel front, you can have the pick between 92 and 100 horsepower 1.6-liter units.

Overall, this isn't a modern car in many ways. But that's what Peugeot needs to sell in order to compete with Dacia and to a lesser degree the Skoda Rapid.
