Update: Three new (real life) photos have been added at the end of the gallery. We love the interior and the 3008 should come out next week.
China has a bunch of cars we can't spell, but the Peugeot 3008 is pretty easy to figure out. The second generation of this minivan-crossover may be about to debut at the Beijing Auto Show later this month, and we are excited to see what it offers.
We've seen several test prototypes out and about in Germany or Sweden. However, all had heavy camouflage obscuring their design. That's not the case with these images we got from XCAR China. They show almost everything, including a striking new grille design that fans out and sharply sculpted headlights.
The design is obviously inspired by the recent Peugeot concept cars. But unlike most cars built by this company, the new 3008 seems like a simple evolution of the previous generation.
We see spy photos every day. So why would we suggest that they are linked to an imminent debut? They aren't, but a couple of shots of the interior emerged on the internet. Not only do they show Peugeot reached into its bag of creativity, but they suggest a press package is being put together.
The cabin of the 3008 is going to be nothing short of amazing. The steering wheel is shaped like an octagon, and there's a digital speedometer. The dashboard cocoons the driver and a fresh strip of aluminum ties everything together. We've also never seen such a gear shifter design before.
The 3008 is built on the same modular platform as the 308 compact hatchback. It will have sister cars from Citroen, DS, Dongfeng and even Opel. We suspect the available engines will range from the 1.2-liter turbo to the 1.6-liter, and all-wheel drive will be optional. For China, the basic unit is expected to be a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter making 147 PS and matched to a 5-speed manual.
Since it's based on the 308, we suspect one of the most powerful engines available will be the 2.0-liter turbodiesel with 180 PS and 400 Nm of torque. That's the same thing you get on the 308 GT and the 508. It should be able to compete nicely with the SEAT Ateca.
