French carmakers have made it their new goal to launch cars that consume just 2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers in just a few years. It's called the 2L challenge and has been set by the local government. Citroen has been playing with Hybrid Air technology since 2013, but Peugeot has just revealed the number can be achieved using a normal car.
The 208 supermini equipped with a BlueHDI powertrain has set a new long-distance fuel consumption record.
Drinking out of a full tank of diesel, the 1.6-liter diesel engine managed to last for 1,337.19-mile (2,152 km). That translates into an amazingly low fuel consumption of only 2 L/100km (141.2 mpg UK).
Sadly, we can't say that the same numbers will be achieved by the average motorist anytime soon. Peugeot achieved this performance on a test circuit at Belchamp, France, where conditions were ideal. The little 208 went round and round in circles for 38 hours without ever stopping. The drivers had to jump from behind the wheel and change places once every 3 or 4 hours.
The Peugeot 208 tested was a ‘Very Low Fuel Consumption’ version, available from the Peugeot dealer network. The 100 horsepower 1.6-liter diesel engine is officially rated at 3 l/100km (94.2 mpg), which is equivalent to CO2 emissions of 79 grams. Peugeot says that all its diesel models fall below the 95-gram border, so they should be cheap to run.
