In an editorial we published in January 2012, we said European automakers like Ford, PSA and Renault who are struggling with their sales should opt for small cars and crossovers.
The French Lion already had such a plan in motion, with the market launch of the 208 supermini following a few months after that. The car's smaller architecture proved to be a huge hit with customers and Peugeot sold 300,000 already.
A new type of supermini was also derived from the 208's platform, bigger, more practical and with a raised ground clearance. Just like we predicted, demand has been through the roof and Peugeot has had to double demand to keep up.
PSA's factory in Mulhouse will increase its output of 2008s from the current 5000 units a month to 10,000, Autonews Europe was told by Peugeot CEO Maxime Picat.
"We have 16,000 orders, mostly coming from dealerships where the 2008 wasn't even presented," Picat said about the 2008.
