Petrov Gets EUR7,000 Speeding Fine in Australia

Earlier today, we have reported to you that the Australian Grand Prix organizers have proceeded to dropping the pit lane speed limit from 100 kph (approximately 62 mph) to 60 kph (approximately 37 mph). The change was done at the request of FIA delegate Charlie Whiting, due to safety reasons, prior to the start of the Friday qualifying.

Although the initial report suggested that the new speed limit would apply only during the Saturday qualifying and Sunday race, it has now emerged that some drivers will have to pay some interesting sums of money for going over the 60 kph mark in the pit lane on Friday.

The first and most surprising report on this topic is linked with Renault's Vitaly Petrov who, according to the GMM news agency, received a “mammoth EUR7000 speeding fine” from the Aussie stewards for going way faster than allowed in the pit lane. The source did not mention the speed recorded by the Russian driver.

Additionally, it seems that Force India's Adrian Sutil and Hispania Racing Team's Bruno Senna have also been caught passing the speed limit by the Australian stewards, and each were handed some EUR1600 fines for this.

While the German driver exceeded the 60 kph speed limit during the second practice session on Friday – as his Force India VJM03 was driven by Paul di Resta during FP1 – Senna's wrongdoing happened during the FP1. The Brazilian stalled his car in the garage for the entire duration of the afternoon practice, due to a gearbox oil leak from his car.
