Auto events around the world have been postponed or altogether canceled because of the ongoing health crisis, but that’s not to say all is bleak. Some organizers, like the famed Petersen Automotive Museum are rethinking and reorganizing, and still delivering treats for car enthusiasts around the world.
If anything, the current context is allowing these organizers to reach a wider audience. Petersen, for example, is holding a Virtual Car Week in August, with the recently announced schedule delivering awesome content for all types of car enthusiasts, whether they’re into concours cars, vintage exotics or are looking to add more items to their collections.
The Virtual Car Week comes to replace the Monterey Car Week event, whose 2020 edition was canceled.
The best part of it is that the Virtual Car Week will be free to access (on the Museum’s YouTube channel), which means every car enthusiast will be hooked up with top auto content. Enthusiasts are asked to submit content, with the Museum offering a platform for it and extra goodies like exclusive interviews and presentations.
Partners include Bonhams, Bring a Trailer, Michelin, Exotics on Broadway, McCall’s Motorworks Revival, RM Sotheby’s, Sonoma Speed Festival, O’Gara Coach and the Porsche Club of America. By these names alone, you get a clear indication of the type of content you’re about to see.
To prepare in advance, between August 1 and 10, the Museum will air “The Road to Petersen Car Week,” which explores explores what it takes to get a car concours-ready. On August 11, the Petersen Car Week officially kicks off, followed by a virtual tour d’elegance, a live auction and vehicle unveil on August 13. The next day is the Porsche show, auction and vehicle spotlight.
Weekend events include vintage racing, hypercar show and auction on August 15, and the Petersen Concours d’Elegance and concept car showing on August 16, which includes classes like American Classic Open & Closed, European Classic Open & Closed, Post-war Preservation, Ferrari Grand Touring, Post-war Sports, Movies and TV, Off-Road, Hot Rod and Shooting Brake.
“We’re thrilled to announce the featured classes for the 2020 Petersen Concours d’Elegance and the amazing list of sponsors to support the week-long virtual events,” Petersen Executive Director Terry L. Karges said earlier this month, when he announced the Virtual Car Week event. “Although we’d much rather be experiencing the vehicles in-person, we’re excited to see the submissions we receive from around the world in each of the concours classes.”
