As more and more carmakers are joining the pursuit to save weight and fuel these days, we find out that Volkswagen too is working on some measures to increase performances on the performance version of the 2013 Golf.

In an interview with Edmunds, Volkswagen’s research chief Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg said that they are currently developing a carbon fiber roof for the car that will save about 8-9 kilograms (18-20 pounds). For now, the research team is trying to make waterproof joints and seal the roof to the windshield and the side body panels.

The lightweight roof will lower the car’s center of gravity a bit and it will also reduce fuel consumption. The 2013 Volkswagen Golf R, fitted with a 2-liter engine and six-speed manual gearbox achieves 12.4 l/100 km (19 mpg) in city and 8.7 l/100 km (27 mpg) on the highway, based on EPA tests.
