People are afraid of earthquakes but sometimes weirder things than that can happen. It's the case of Natalie Huddleston, a customer of a tanning salon in Ross Township, Pennsylvania, who found herself trapped in her car when a sinkhole suddenly opened and swallowed the poor lady’s ride. Fortunately the owner of the shop heard her calls in time to help the lady get out off the car.
Lisa Masley, the owner of Hollywood Tans, rescued her customer from the car right before it was swallowed into the large hole as severe storms moved through the area Tuesday afternoon. According to officials quoted by WTAE, a 60-inch stormwater management system runoff pipe collapsed causing the sinkhole to form. In fact, authorities said they have warned business owners that an old pipe underground is falling apart and urgent repairs are implied, but nobody reacted.
The tanning salon and other businesses were evacuated, while police said the owner of the property is responsible for repairs. Overnight, a tow truck was able to pull Huddleston’s vehicle out of the huge sinkhole after crews drained it, revealing the car underneath the debris and rubble. Meanwhile there still is a huge hole in the ground to be covered by workers.
Problem is, according to the source, that the area had similar problems in the past and the pipes probably need to be changed to be sure the incident won’t repeat and nobody is put in danger again.
