In today’s “humans can be horrible” news, one man from Lakeside, Colorado left his dog locked in the car in the parking lot of a Walmart, and the poor dog is now suffering from neurological issues because of it.
Lakeside Police Officer Dave Kornowski tells Fox News that, with this heat, they get about 3 or 4 animal cruelty calls each week. You could say that he’s pretty used to the sight of a distressed animal in a hot car by now, but even for him, this was hard to see: a dog in a 123+-degree car, so distressed that it could barely stand or bark.

It happened outside a local Walmart, in the parking lot. The owner had gone in for shopping and left the dog in the car, with the windows barely rolled down. Not that it made much difference, either way: inside, temperatures peaked at 123 and the dog was in terrible shape when the officer arrived at the scene.

He smashed the rear window and got the pooch, whose name is Pedro. Pedro was pretty bad: he was panting so much he couldn’t even stand anymore.

“The dog couldn’t even bark it was panting so heavy,” officer Kornowski. “The mouth was dry, he was lethargic. He couldn’t even control himself.”

Animal control also got there and took the dog to a hospital. Pedro remains at the hospital as of the time of writing and he’s been diagnosed with neurological issues from heat distress.

When the owner got out, he caused a scene about the broken window. He then got into the car, claimed that the engine wasn’t running and sped off – only to be apprehended across the parking lot and arrested. Kornowski doesn’t say if he’s facing charges, but he does take a moment to ring the alarm for all dog owners / drivers out there.

“If you love your animal you wouldn't leave it in the hot car like that,” he says.
