Patrick Dempsey to Continue Racing with Porsche Team in 2015

Fans know him for his role as “McDreamy” in the medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy”. However, for the last two years Patrick Dempsey has no longer been just an actor, as he has been chasing his passion for racing. Dempsey has been racing with Porsche’s motorsport team for two years now and has recently announced that he will continue to do so in 2015 as well.

Dempsey will be racing a Porsche 911 RSR in the Sports Car World Endurance Championship (WEC), including the famous LeMans 24-hour race. “I’m already looking forward to 2015, and I’m proud to be able to contest the entire WEC as well as LeMans with a Porsche,” the actor said at the launch of the program on Wednesday, at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Dempsey added: “Porsche was winning sportscar races before I was even born. As a childhood fan of Porsche, I grew up with their successes al LeMans, Daytona and the Targa Florio. There are moments when I simply cannot believe that I am now a member of this great team.”

The new Steve McQueen

According to Porsche, the Grey’s Anatomy star will compete in the races of the Sports Car World Endurance Championship with the Porsche customer team Dempsey Proton Racing on the GTE-Am class. One of his teammates will be veteran Porsche works driver Patrick Long (USA), with whom the actor is already training off track. Apart from WEC, guest appearances in Porsche’s brand trophy series such as the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup as support to the Formula One races are also planned.

Named by some as the new Steve McQueen, Dempsey has been promoting racing competitions ever since he got into the business. Not only does he invest his own money into it, but Patrick is considered as the one that brought LeMans to Hollywood with his 2013 “Patrick Dempsey: Racing Le Mans” documentary.

During his first season with Porsche, the actor scored fourth place in the GTE-Am class, at the LeMans 24 Hours in 2013 with the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR.

In addition, he moved up two podium placings in the American Le Mans Series, taking home second from Laguna Seca and third from Austin. As to this year’s racing ventures, Dempsey finished fifth at LeMans in a Porsche 911 RSR and took a podium spot at the new Tudor United SportsCar Championship round at the Virginia International Raceway, where he finished third driving a Porsche 911 GT America.
