France’s capital Paris has kept the front pages busy these days because of a series of disturbing stories. Anyway, without having anything to do with the shootings, here’s another puzzling piece of news: Anne Hidalgo, Paris’ Mayor is seeking to impose a ban for motorcycles manufactured before 2000, with other age-based vehicle restrictions envisioned as well.
Broken down into categories, the vehicles for which the intended ban represents a threat are as follows:
- Passenger cars registered before 31 December 1996 inclusive,
- Vans and light trucks by 30 September 1997,
- Coaches, buses and trucks by 30 September 2001 inclusive
- Two-wheeled motorized vehicles prior to 2000.
While the ultimate goal is a noble one, the means for reaching it seem to impact the lives of quite a lot of tax payers. Let alone those who own vintage cars and motorcycles, of which some are really valuable pieces, and many others…
As motorbiker reports, it’s somewhat funny (in a way) to see the two-wheelers as a major source of pollution, especially when compared with the big-bore diesel cars and trucks. The Mayor will have this proposal presented to the local council on 9-10 February, with a possible date for establishing it as a law in mid-April. And of course, a larger area of the French capital may be envisioned to fall under these restrictions, in case this weird law passes.

An effort to reduce pollution
This plan is part of a series of efforts the administration of Paris is making to improve the air quality in the French capital. The proposal also includes several ways to compensate for the results such a ban would produce among local motorists.
