In order to boost the new 208’s sporting appeal, Peugeot has brought the Type R5 rally car to the Paris Motor Show. The car complies with Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC), and it will be able to be legally entered into the competition once its development is completed, some time in the second half of next year.
It features a 1.6-liter engine, which puts out 280 hp, which are sent to all four wheels via a five-speed sequential gearbox. This gives the R5 “slightly higher than that of the S2000”, as Bertrand Vallat, the project director said. He added: "Based on an optimisation of costs [. . .] the regulations impose, among other things, a maximum price for certain parts and technical limitations such as a minimum weight of components of the chassis and engine. In addition, a certain number of components of the vehicle must be similar. The hub carrier is a perfect example. All four must be identical. This makes operation considerably easier and limits costs and stocking."

The car weights just over 1,200 kg, and with the 18-inch wheels fitted, it is ideally setup for tarmac use, though it has been designed to work well on gravel and other loose surfaces, as well.
