Paris 2012: BMW M135i xDrive

All wheel drive used to be a heavy system that Land Rovers used to get you where need to kill that elephant or enemy insurgent. But now, every carmaker has some sort of all-wheel drive model, and it’s not just SUV, but also sedans, coups and hatchbacks, even convertibles.

The hothatch market has also evolved into this semi-detatched direction, and xDrive will be offered on BMW’s most exciting hatchback ever, the M135i!

The xDrive system isn’t there so you can clim Everest, it’s there to deliver the power in the best way to the road, especially under severe conditions. BMW’s setup sends 60 percent of the drive torque to the rear wheels and 40 per cent to the front wheels, under normal conditions, however this is shifter around to where the traction is.

Th M135i xDrive comes with a powerful 3-liter engine that produces 315 hp (320 PS) and 450Nm (332 lb-ft). Through a standard 8-speed automatic, this is channeled to the road and the car gets from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds.

The car will though only 7.8 lt/100km (30.2mpg US) on the combined run. How have they done that?
