Parallels by MINI and United Visual Artists Revealed

A while back we were telling you that for this year’s Salone del Mobile, MINI joined forces with United Visual Artists to bring out yet another unique creation. This year’s masterpiece is called Parallels and features interactive sounds and lights that hint at mobile connectivity.

Anders Warming, Head of MINI Design and the guys from UVA worked close together to create the three-part light and sound installation that is supposed to resemble the MINI Connected system and the possibilities intelligent connectivity opens up.

Just like the onboard infotainment system used on the MINI, the installation wants to seamlessly make transitions between home, office and car, as they are all part of your life. This connectivity is then conceived as a palpable art form, in the shape of MINI’s new interface design with various LED lights.

In PARALLELS the lights are reflected by three rings, each with a diameter of 1.5 meters, similar to the design on the MINI’s dash. The rings are fixed to the wall one meters apart and each projects a tunnel of light measuring around 10 meters in length and creating a virtual “space inside a space”.

Interested visitors can then move around, between the lights without being guided in any way, free to do as they please while the hue of each circle changes from diamond white to turquoise and dark blue. However, the light changes are triggered by the visitor’s movement, through carefully placed motion sensors, engaging them in what MINI calls ‘interactive dialogue’.

Apparently, this action and reaction is supposed to create an emotional connection between the installation and the visitors. We’re guessing there’s only one way to see if that’s true and that’s by experiencing the whole thing yourself.
