Panasonic Aims to Speed Up the Democratization of In-Vehicle Wireless Charging

Although we’re not exactly getting the usual concourse of physical Las Vegas premieres, that doesn’t mean the all-virtual CES 2021 is giving up on showcasing interesting innovations. Panasonic, for example, has revealed two new versions of in-vehicle wireless charging technology – one with a static, and the other with a moving coil.

The situation is simple; everyone has at least once experienced the need for a convenient charging solution for their devices while on the move. Panasonic estimates the average U.S. household now has around ten connected devices, with many of them taken inside the vehicle on both short and long trips.

That means there’s a lot of still untapped potential for providing fast and efficient charging solutions inside the vehicle. Panasonic thinks the way forward is ditching the cables (the so-called wired or tethered solutions) in favor of its new wireless charging systems.

And the company’s new “wireless charging system aims to be a more accurate and more efficient way to charge,” while also being “accessible in any vehicle without the hassle of first plugging in.” There are two solutions from the company, the most interesting being the one with a moving coil. That’s because it enables “the perfect alignment and coupling with the smartphone coil.”

The rest of the features are equally impressive and include charging power of up to 15W, enhanced thermal management, NFC/Bluetooth/Wi-Fi connections (allowing the ability to make/receive calls and use the smartphone’s apps), as well as the adoption of the Qi 1.3 charging standard.

Unfortunately, the Japanese brand hasn’t shared any details on availability and pricing. We might be in for quite a long wait before this becomes mainstream, as the company mentions the moving coil option is based on “patent pending tracking technology.”

Of course, this isn’t the only novelty from Panasonic Automotive; the company has also introduced its first fully wireless Wi-Fi camera, as well as an augmented reality Head-Up Display, among other gadgets.
