You might have heard that the Tesla Model S is currently the least stolen car in the US. That’s because it’s basically a huge computer on wheels, forcing thieves to be a bit more inventive to nick one. Moreover, there isn’t a market for Model S parts now and ultimately, users have the Tesla app on their smartphone.
This not only lets you check the car’s status, open and start it, but also allows owners to see where it is. A great tool against car thieves as one owner discovered a few days ago.
According to a report from 10News, La Jolla police was alerted by resident Karim Pirani, who claimed his Tesla Model S was stolen but he knows where to find it.
Using the Tesla app on his smartphone, the owner redirected police forces towards his stolen car that was driving at around 100 miles on the highway, trying to escape.
“I was watching it on my mobile app, it was going at 100 miles per hour,” Pirani told 10News. “So we were able to see how fast it was going. But there was no way that I could actually stop the car.”
The police deployed spike strips, puncturing the car’s tires and forcing it to come to a stop. The thief and his passenger were both arrested.
Seems the good ol’ car alarm days are gone and if you really want to protect your car from thieves, all you need is a tracking device and a smartphone. Tesla’s newest smartphone app will also let users shut the car down remotely.
