If you’re one of those BMW fans that think the golden age of the brand was back in the 1980s you’ll be glad you opened this article. We found a good condition 1988 BMW 535is up for grabs on eBay for just $7,000.
That price might seem high for someone that doesn’t know what the 535is is capable of and what engine lies under its bonnet when looking at the car’s age. However, considering the prices these cars have these days, paying under $10,000 is a bargain.
To better put thing into perspective let me tell you that the E28 535is was just one step away from the M5. As a matter of fact it had the same exterior styling and a sport suspension but it lacked the same powerplant under the bonnet.
Even so, the inline 6-cylinder M30B34 engine was a peach, with a 3.4-liter capacity putting down 182 HP. It may seem like it’s not that much but cars back then used to weigh seriously less than their modern counterparts.
Since this is a 27-year old car, some issues are prone to show up. “Paint is what you would expect from a 25 year old Texas car,” says the ad, adding that “[the] body is free of major rust, with a small amount of surface rust in the bottom left hand corner of the rear window and the upper corners of the trunk seal.”
Upgrades include: Bav Auto / Tubular ceramic coated long tube headers with dual pipes to Magnaflow metallic cats and Billy Boat back box, Mark D’Silva and Dinan performance chips, Koni adjustable swaybars, Bilstein HD shocks, H&R springs, Hella H1/H4 headlight conversion, Autosport Solutions short shift kit, S3.72 rear diff, and 17” BBS Style 5 wheels with polished barrels.
So yes, for $7,000 you get a decent car that may need a bit more TLC but for this price tag, it’s more than just worth it.
