A car drove straight into a busy Starbucks in Turkey the other day, but unlike with other incidents of this type, this wasn’t an act of terrorism.
According to local reports cited by F5Haber, the incident was the driver’s fault, who lost control of the vehicle. The whole thing was captured by the Starbucks CCTV cameras, and is available at the bottom of the page.
It went down on the Turkmenbashi Boulevard in Adana, Turkey, when the driver of a white car lost control of the vehicle upon making a turn and drove straight into the tables set out on the sidewalk. There were plenty of people enjoying their caffeinated drinks, but as luck would have it, no one was seated in the central area, where the car smashed through and eventually stopped.
Most customers managed to get up from their seats and run for safety before the impact, thus escaping only with some cuts and bruises. However, unconfirmed reports say that 2 died later in the hospital, from the injuries sustained.
For the time being, no other details are available: there’s no word on whether the driver was simply inexperienced or under the influence, or what prevented him or her from braking sooner.
In June this year, a similar incident happened in the Russian capital, Moscow, when a cab driver blaming exhaustion drove up the sidewalk, ramming people with his car. He then tried to flee the scene and was detained by an angry mob who put a beating to him believing him to be a terrorist.
Speaking from jail, the man said he had been working extra hours to make money to provide for his family and he dozed off at the wheel. He claimed he didn’t remember the actual accident, but he realized what he’d done when he woke up, so he knew he was in trouble – hence his attempt to run away.
