Oshkosh HEMTT A3, the Eco-Friendly Tactical Truck

Who says that if you are in the people killin' business, you shouldn't care about the environment? We see no connection between the amount of incendiary bombs to be carried around on the battlefront and the need to eat a gazillion gallons of fuel every mile to do so...

And neither does Oshkosh, who turned up at CALSTART’s Hybrid Truck Users Forum (HTUF) in Atlanta with their newest version of the Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) A3.

Equipped with the ProPulse diesel electric hybrid system, the HEMMT provides 24 percent better fuel economy than its conventional peer, when running at 60 mph and as much as 33 percent improvement in a start-and-stop-cycle.

"We focused our efforts on optimizing the vehicle design and engine control strategy to maximize fuel economy, and those efforts have paid off significantly,” Gary Schmiedel, Oshkosh Advanced Product Engineering vice president said in a release. “

"We’re sharing the research results for the first time this week because the Hybrid Truck Users Forum brings together the best in industry technology with the U.S. Army. At Oshkosh Corporation, we take a similar approach towards excellence by applying leading technologies with a strong customer focus in an effort to better serve our military customers.

Oshkosh also had in mind the comfort of the crew serving the HEMMT, as it now has reduced noise and vibration. It doesn't not necessarily carry weapons per se, but can aid troops by providing them with 100 kW of electrical power to "support the initial deployment of troops." And, you guessed it, all that power is green...

We are proud of the initiative and investments member companies like Oshkosh are making to develop new, efficient and clean technologies for heavy-duty and military trucks,” Bill Van Amburg, CALSTART vice president concluded. “Together we will help improve our national security by lessening our dependence on fossil fuels.
