Word has it Chrysler Group is working on a supercharged Hemi V8 engine that will develop no less than 640 HP. Codenamed “Hellcat”, the new 6.2-liter mill is expected to arrive with the next-generation Dodge Challenger.
The information was revealed by the Allpar.com website, who claims the new engine was confirmed by Chrysler insiders, who also said the “Hellcat” could be fitted to other company vehicles as well. Contacted by Automotive News, a Chrysler spokesman declined to comment.
According to a Chrysler engineer, the 640 HP engine is supposed to be a “last hurrah” before rising fuel economy standards will affect high displacement engines built in the United States. Also, the “Hellcat” will help the Challenger compete with the high-performance Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and the Ford Mustang Cobra.
The next-generation Dodge Challenger, which will gain Chrysler’s new eight-speed transmission as well, is expected to go into production in mid-2014 for the 2015 model year.
