Having made its world public debut at this year’s Geneva Auto Show (March 2011), the Opel Ampera is to go on sale later this year for EUR42,900, as Europe’s first electric vehicle to enable ‘go anywhere at any time’ mobility. Or at least this is how the German auto brand brags.

But let’s see what this unlimited driving range and practicality means to Opel. As a fresh reminder, we’ll tell you the model is powered by a 111 kW/150 hp electric motor which delivers 370 Newton meters torque right from the very first turn of the wheel.

The motor draws its power from a 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery and works in conjunction with a gasoline-fueled engine. The motor-engine combination pack enough punch to allow the Ampera to reach speeds of 161 km/h and accelerate from naught to sixty in around nine seconds.

The plug-in hybrid can travel some 500 kilometers on a full tank, the first 40 to 80 kilometers doable in electric mode alone. It also has a top speed of 161 km/h. The Ampera also provides a total driving range of more than 500 kilometers thanks to its range-extending gasoline engine.

“Thanks to the Ampera’s intelligent and practical extended-range capability, drivers enjoy peace of mind because they will never be left stranded by the roadside with a depleted battery,”
Opel explains.

The car comes equipped with a six meter long charging cable conveniently stowed in the trunk. Using a standard 230V/16A power outlet, owners can fully recharge the battery in less than four hours and also program the charging time to take advantage of lower, off-peak electricity rates.

Safety wise, the car went through more than 50 crash tests at various speeds and angles, including front, side and rear impacts as well as rollovers. A number of tests were also carried out to ensure the safety of the lithium-ion battery system, including its water tightness in wet or flooded road conditions. In an emergency, the battery pack can be easily disconnected by rescue services.

In terms of styling, the Ampera distinguishes itself thanks to the ‘boomerang’ headlamp housings, a prominent grille and bold Opel badge. Inside the car we find the Driver Information Center (DIC), a reconfigurable graphic display. In addition to the standard electronic climate control and radio with steering wheel controls, a Bose premium audio system is offered together with a navigation system as an optional package.

Opel also revealed that first deliveries of the series production car will be made before the end of this year. Meanwhile, we invite you to take a look at the comprehensive image gallery of the new Opel Ampera below.
