Opel wants to start an initiative that will bring more transparency towards consumers in an attempt to extend credibility after German manufacturer Volkswagen AG became enrolled in an emissions scandal.
The company will voluntarily publish real-world emissions and consumption figures for its cars starting Q2 of 2016. These new figures are meant to reflect everyday driving conditions and will come closer to reality. All the other car manufacturers will eventually have to do the same, but Opel stands out as the brand that has the courage to be the first to do this voluntarily and ahead of schedule.
Once the new measure debuts, Opel will publish both WLTP cycle (the new one) and NEDC (current European cycle) results for its cars. The new figures would help consumers estimate their overall fuel consumption in a more accurate way than they get today. Hopefully, future cars launched after the approval of this initiative won’t count on loopholes to get better results. The current NEDC cycle has several loopholes often used by carmakers to significant results.
The first Opel model to feature the new fuel consumption results in the Worldwide Harmonized Light Duty Vehicles Test Procedure will be the Astra. This means Opel will expand Astra’s spec sheet with a few new chapters according to WLDP specific procedures and tests.
When all the car manufacturers are forced by law to abide by the new legislation, the consumers will benefit from a transparent way of comparing cars, as long as the vehicles have both been tested in the new procedure.
Furthermore, Opel has started working on new solutions for increasing the effectiveness of SCR systems. In the summer of 2016, Opel promises to launch its new improvements to their diesel engine range. This particular activity involves a voluntary customer satisfaction field action for 43,000 vehicles on the road.
Among them, Opel mentions the Zafira Tourer, the Insignia, and the Cascada. Once a calibration for these cars becomes available, their customers will be notified and will receive the changes for free.
