Every major European car show, we get two sets of press releases in our email, one from Opel and one from Vauxhall, but we rarely get two see both badges on the same car at one particular venue. This year’s Geneva Motor Show is probably going to be the same, but at least we don’t have to report on an MPV or van like last year.
Let’s just start with the only car from these two brands to get our blood going in a long time. Yes, the Opel Astra OPC, or Vauxhall Astra VXR if you live in Britain. This brand new car is most powerful production Astra ever made.
It’s got a massive 280 horsepower at the disposal. Based on the GTC’s platform and powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged direct injection engine this car will do 155 mph (250 km/h) flat out. This makes it more powerful than the Golf R and Renault Megane RS (facelift with 265 hp), but less so than the Focus RS. Even so, power isn’t everything in the hothatch war.
With a limited slip differential, a proper mechanical one, at the front and HiPerStrut (High Performance Strut), this car sound perfect... on paper at least.
