Opel's Small City Car to Be Called Mokka?

Funky name, for a funky car, some might say, provided the rumor we heard this week is true. Some of you know that the German auto maker is working on a small, four seater city car, which will be deployed in between the Agila and the Corsa and onto European roads in 2012.

Until now, the world, as well as the people from Opel, knew the project under the name Allegra. That will not be the street name of the model, inside sources told L'Automobile Magazine. The new model will be called, according to the whispering voices, Mokka.

Far from being Mokka (the term, with a slightly different spelling, signifies “for free” in Eastern Europe slang), the new small car is intended as a direct competitor to other minis on the market, including the Fiat 500 and some of the MINI models.

The details about the car, which is expected to be launched sometime next year, are not yet known. Design wise, the Mokka was once said it would take inspiration from the Trixx concept, an older dream Opel once had about downsizing.

However, unlike the Trixx, the Mokka will be much more aggressive, if we are to trust a series of info leaked a while back. Adorned with LED daytime running lights, the front of the car will be something like an Astra GTC in its infancy.

For the small exterior, Opel will use small engines as well. The range of engines will open with a 1.0l unit, which will consume 3.5l/100km (67 mpg). According to the rumors, the prices Opel will charge for the Mokka will start at EUR12,580.
