Ahead of the fifth-generation supermini's debut at the Paris Motor Show, both Opel and its British sister brand Vauxhall have revealed a number of very significant details regarding the Corsa E.
Production has been scheduled to start at the Eisenach and Zaragoza factories later this year, where both 3- and 5-door models will be put together in a variety of flavors.

A revitalized engine range offers clear choices for all customers, whether they are looking affordability, dynamism or fuel economy. The most powerful engine offered sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds, while the most frugal needs only 3.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (combined), equivalent to 85 grams of CO2 emitted.

The highlight of the engine range is the new 1.0-liter ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo unit. This is the same 3-cylinder launched on the ADAM mini a short while ago and the specs are very similar. Like Ford's 1-liter EcoBoost or the 1.2 TSI from VW, two power outputs will be offered – 90 PS or 115 PS, both in combination with 170 Nm (125 lb-ft) of torque from just 1,800 rpm.

The base model of the Corsa E range is a 1.2-liter with 70 PS and the 1.4-liter ecoFLEX with 90 PS is also offered with Euro6 revissions. While cheaper, they don't offer the same punch as the turbo engines. The base 1.2, for example, only boasts 115 Nm (85 lb-ft) of torque and as such needs 16 seconds to reach 100 km/h, topping out at 162 km/h. The 1.4 is a little better, taking 13.2 seconds to reach the benchmark speed.

Weirdly, the German company has decided to also keep its older 1.4-liter Turbo engine, rated at 100 PS. Not only its output, but also its price lands it in between the two 1-liter engines, but fuel consumption and emissions are predictably not as impressive as either of them and we think it's best avoided.

Both Opel and Vauxhall will offer only one diesel engine at launch. It's a 1.3-liter with 95 PS, 5-speed manual transmission and braking energy recuperation system. It will do 87.8mpg in the combined cycle (3.2 l/100km), but it's also the most expensive new Corsa. This is why a 75 PS has been scheduled for release next year.

Opel says the new Corsa will have its newest six-speed automatic transmission. Fitted to the 1.4-liter engine with 90 PS, it costs €1,100 extra and adds 1 l/100km to the fuel consumption. However, you can also get the all-new automated manual transmission Easytronic 3.0. It's available exclusively with the same 1.4 ecoFLEX and costs €575 more than a five-speed stick.

Our say: The 90 PS 1-liter Turbo is the pick of the range unless you're going to do long motorway trips.
